Memories and honours of Pavol Demitra

Marian Gaborik, national teammate and a good friend: "Demo,you will always be in my heart. You were one of my best friends on and off the ice.You will be greatly missed by all of us. My condolences..."

Zdeno Chara, national teammate and a good friend: "Pavol was a guy who was always easy-going. He was always friendly with everybody and never really had conflict with anybody. He really was very favored and a popular guy between other guys. Obviously we all know he was an extremely talented player and people probably don't know how dedicated a dad he was, always spending time with his kids and family. And I think that speaks for itself, too. When he had offers from the NHL, but he choose to return back home and be there for their kids and his wife, when there was time they were going to schools and they chose the school system in Slovakia."

Marian Hossa, national team mate and a good friend honours Pavol by wearing his number on his skates.
"Pavol was a close friend of mine. It's something I want to do at least through the preseason and maybe a couple of games in the regular season. We'll see. I just want to basically say he's always going to be with me and with us. We'll always think about Pavol because he was such a close friend. When the puck is dropped, I'll worry about the game."

Jaroslav Halak, Blues goaltender and Demitra's national teammate, honours Pavol with a picture of him on his new mask that he will be wearing during the 2011-12 season with St. Louis Blues where Demitra spent eight great seasons of his career...

St. Louis Blues hockey club: "Pavol was an incredibly passionate and dedicated player and his influence in St. Louis was not only felt on the ice, but throughout the community."

Vancouver Canucks hockey club: "It is with great sadness that we learn of the sudden passing of Pavol Demitra and his colleagues of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club. Pavol was dedicated and passionate about his young family and the game of hockey. Pavol was a valued teammate and member of our organization and will be sorely missed. We send our deepest condolences to the entire Demitra family and their friends so affected by this tragedy."

Minnesota Wild hockey club: “Pavol Demitra was a valuable member of our team for two seasons and helped the Wild claim its first-ever Northwest Division title in 2008. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Demitra family as well as all of the families that lost loved ones today."

LA Kings hockey club: "The Los Angeles Kings organization is deeply saddened with the tragic news of this morning’s plane crash in Russia that was carrying the members of the KHL’s Lokomotiv organization, including former Kings forward Pavol Demitra, former Kings prospect Jan Marek and many other members of the NHL family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and friends of those affected by this terrible occurrence."

Matt Keator, Demitra's agent: "People were drawn to Demo. He was a great friend and great teammate. He was always the type to bring people together. This is just awful. He was such a popular guy with everyone he has ever played with. I went out with him three weeks ago in Russia and he’s the one who organized the whole team to go out together. A very loyal friend and teammate. That’s what all these guys talk about. I work with a bunch of the Slovaks and they all talk to him. They all hold Pavol in high esteem.”

Ray Bennett, St. Louis Blues Assistant Coach: “In times like this I think people tend to try and find the good in all people, but with Pavol, you really didn’t have to look to find it. He was really one of the good, good gentlemen in the game and really such a tremendous family man and had such a good heart. Demitra was a “Coach’s Dream,” on and off the ice. It was his toughness. It was his skill. It was his character, his personality. Captain of the Slovakian team for years and years, and certainly a leader in our locker room at the time as well.”

Henrik Sedin, former Vancouver Canucks teammate: “He had a great spirit, he was always fun to be around. I know from playing in Europe, and growing up there, he was seen as maybe the best Slovakian player of all time. He was huge back there. And I think he showed that in the Olympic tournament here in Vancouver, how good of a player he was.”
